This wagon was used to discharge ballast (rock) on track.
There are two types of ballast wagon, one that discharges between the rails YC and one that discharges outside the rails YF.
YC wagons are four wheel wagons and had restricted speed, thus could not run on express trains.
This means to move the wagons on the network they had to run on slow goods or special trains.
Modern railways struggle to operate trains at slow speeds as they slow down the fast trains.
Replacement bogie-type ballast trains are now used.
